Seiankornai: « 1d20+6 = 1 + 6 = 7 » Init

Dragonhawk: ((ok, yeah, go ahead and roll init))

Seiankornai: (going to attempt Sype, Grok?)

Malaina: « 1d20+9 = 3 + 9 = 12 » Malaina and Vari’s Initiative Grok: Grok acts quickly, with a roll of « 1d20+7 = 18 + 7 = 25 »

When last we saw our heroes, they had set the stage for a little exercise in pretense. The drakes are currently peeking over the gable of on large roof, while the “bandit” portion of the party was getting paid in the alley below. Thurirl is observing from a shadowy corner.
The pay is in Jessaila’s bag, and that’s the signal, so….
Surprise round! Thurirl!

  • Thurirl casts an entangle spell against his undercover allies.
    Thurirl: « 1d20+12 = 20 + 12 = 32 » Spellcasting

The weeds between the cobbles and the vines climbing the walls suddenly enlarge and reach out for the ‘bandits’. Yay – how annoyting

  • Malaina didn’t expect this, so honesstly curses as vines wrap around her legs
Seiankornai: “Hess, clever lizard” Seian thinks
  • Seiankornai is raoring angrily too much to say it outloud
    Thurirl: « 1d20+12 = 8 + 12 = 20 » Hide

Vari! Surprise round!
You whisper to Seiankornai: you want a roll-off on our inits?

  • Vari takes into the air, roaring and generally looking like a rabid Drake who probably missed his shots last year
    Seiankornai whispers: « 1d20 = 1 » tie-breaker
    Seiankornai whispers: ….
    You whisper to Seiankornai: « 1d20 = 4 »
    Seian, surprise us!
  • Seiankornai flies above the entangling cobblestone weeds

    Grok: Grok throws a rock at the foe! « 1d20+11 = 3 + 11 = 14 » to hit, for « 1d12+8 = 6 + 8 = 14 » damage, and smaller opponents must make a Fortitude save DC equal to damage suffered, or become sprawled.
Grok: Darn.
  • Seiankornai dodges the loose cobblestones
    Grok: ((Done))

Grok has received initiative.
Jessaila has received initiative.
Jessaila!
Seiankornai: “Stupid ogre! You shall not attack anymore of our friend’s caravans!!!”

  • Jessaila throws a half-panicked look at Durt. “You’ve tricked us?”
  • Seiankornai speaks in Woanish
Durt: “What? I didn’t hire him!”
  • Jessaila casts Expeditious Retreat on herself, and then tries to disentangle her legs from the vines.
Jessaila: “Then what are they doing here?”
  • Jessaila makes with the magic. « 1d20+11 = 20 + 11 = 31 »
Durt: “Clean out your ears…they insulting me here!”
  • Seiankornai knows where/to whom his initiative luck has gone to :P
    Jessaila: « 1d20+8 = 7 + 8 = 15 » Reflex to escape weeds.
Durt: “COME AND GET IT DRAKE! WE make ARMOR with your HIDE! – sell to high elves, get rich.”
  • Seiankornai gets incensed at that, and notes in the back of his mind to cheak out these “high elves”
  • Jessaila manages to extricate herself from the weeds, albeit with only one boot still on.
  • Jessaila will have to don her missing boot next round.

    Jamshid par-Bahadur has connected.
    Seiankornai: ((greetings))
  • Thurirl conjures the illusion of a Saurian dressed all in black with cruel-looking weapons. He hopes it meets the expectations of those who anticipate an assassin from the shadows. He has it drop down from the roof in the midst of the fight.
  • Thurirl makes the black Saurian hiss out threats in his native tongue.
    Thurirl: (okay, quick retcon)
Durt: “Gah! Get lizard-caster!”
  • Thurirl has the Saurian speak in Vidoss: “Prepare to unite with the shadows, soft-skins!”
  • Durt points at the illusion, convinced that it’s the same Saurian he saw before
  • Jessaila shouts “Watch out!”
Grok: “Who you calling soft skin? Get over here Thuril!”
Isabis: ((Grok speaks Vidoss??))
  • Durtguard 10 throws a knife at Vari, hitting « 1d20+6 = 7 + 6 = 13 » for possible « 1d6+3 = 5 + 3 = 8 »

Modifying the fog-of-war manually without a server running affects only the global exposed area (i.e. the entire map), even
if one or more tokens are selected. If you want your changes to apply to individual tokens, start a MapTool server with
Individual Fog enabled (you can leave the Alias field empty to make an anonymous server, if you wish).

This warning will not appear again for this campaign.

Jamshid par-Bahadur: ((or actually that all the ogres are on Durt’s side))

Jamshid par-Bahadur: ((so scratch that))

Durtguard: ((Heh, OK. The enemies available are the drakes, Thurirl’s illusion, and maybe Thurirl if you can spot him.))

Seiankornai: ((Seian can take a bit of punishment, just don’t get a real crit ;) ))

  • Jamshid par-Bahadur charges Seiankornai and slashes once at the drake (Attack 11 for 9)

Durtguard: “Whut? I hit drake! Argh! Stupid scale-drake!”

Seiankornai: “Hess, don’t you know? She is the Ironscale Drake!” (The use of “she” is intentional, Seian doesn’t expect an ogre to be able to tell a male drake from a female drake, and would prefer us to be as little trackable as possible)

  • Vari isn’t sure he likes being refered to as female…especially since he is blue
  • Vari thinks Seian should be the female since he is pink
  • Durtguard 23 brandishes his sword at Seiankornai and yells “Come down and fight like warrior, coward drake!” (Taunt, « 1d20+4 = 20 + 4 = 24 » )

Jessaila: ((Yes.))

Malaina: ((Whose turn is it?))

Grok, go!
Malaina: ((Maybe Grok can attack one of the ogres? He is Grok enough he could get away with it.))

  • Vari watchs the dagger fly wide
  • Durtguard 10 gives up in disgust and tries taunting Vari instead (in Woanish) “Come down here you son of a grass snake!” (( « 1d20+4 = 16 + 4 = 20 » vs Vari’s sense motive, but it just fails if Vari doesn’t happen to speak Woanish))
Malaina: ((No, he only speaks Vidoss and Melios))
  • Vari tilts his head, wondering what he is saying
    Malaina (and Jamshid!)
    Malaina: « 1d20+9 = 9 + 9 = 18 » Chakram; Keen 4 @ Vari

Thurirl: ((arrow to the knee? X3))

Malaina: ((Yes!))

  • Seiankornai knocks Jamshid aside as he goes for the wounded ogre in front of him, teeth bared and claws outstretched
Durtguard: ((OK, semi-cutscene superspeed; attacking half-party gets one cutscene action))

Seiankornai dispatches one winded ogre
Durtguard: ((Vari?))

Malaina: ((eh?))

Durtguard: ((Vari is an “attacker”, he gets a cutscene action; say what he’s doing but don’t bother rolling unless it’s so exceptional I ask for it specifically))

  • Vari gets his revenge for the bumping of the daggers on his hide earlier, rears up and grabs the ogre by his shoulders and chomps his teeth down, pulling up and taking the head with him as he flies back up
    Durtguard: ((OK, now everyone else))
  • Thurirl has his shadow jump up and sit on an ogre’s shoulders… then an arrow zips through the illusion and into the ogre’s head, the shadow vanishing into mist…
    Isabis: ((Jessail and Grok?))

Grok: anyways, night all

Grok is disconnected.
Grok pummels the toughness out of the ogre in front of him
Cobblestones make great subdual wapons, apparently

  • Jessaila swings wildly at Seian with her saber, connecting with a blow or two, but only with the flat of her blade.
Jessaila: “DIE, you draconic foul-weather omen!”
  • Malaina unhooks her last Chakram and throws it, ‘aiming’ for the ‘reddish/pink’ drake, but it ends up lodging into the Guard 42 neck or throat, either way, it finds a vessel
  • Isabis retreats behind Durtguard 14, then whacks him over the head several times with a cobblestone in her sling.
  • Isabis hamstrings the unconscious ogre just to be sure he doesn’t try to go back to work tomorrow
  • Seiankornai wrestles convincingly with Jessalia and Grok for a bit, even getting some blood drawn on himself, before flying off in retreat
  • Thurirl just stands up and puts away his bow, walking off as if he’s just out for a stroll.
  • Malaina collects her Chakrams, making sure not to step into the large pools of blood
The alley quiets down from the sounds of battle; the drakes fly off to the other side of the next-door roof (at least)
Durt: “It quiet out there…you alive?”
  • Seiankornai licks some actual wounds, but he’s not in bad shape
  • Jessaila allows herself to get a bloody arm-wound in the tussle.
  • Vari makes sure Seian is ok, planning to scold Jess later for being so rough
    Jessaila: “Many of us are.”
Durt: “Huh.”
  • Durt looks around
  • Seiankornai assures Vari that he’s fine and that Jess did well
Jessaila: “I think we drove them off. Who WERE those guys?”
Durt: “Stupid caravan mercenaries. Maybe sunchasers. All trying to kill poor Durt just because they loos a little money.”

Malaina: “Did someone take something of their’s? I know Drakes can be a bit possessive.”

Durt: “…no bodyguard left. Durt going to be next week’s assasination special.” Jessaila: “Saying drakes are possessive – that’s like saying elves are superior.”
  • Thurirl goes for a moonlit walk to contemplate the next move.
Malaina: “And you will never hear me say that.”
Jessaila: “Something of a truism.”

Jamshid par-Bahadur has connected.

  • Malaina rolls her eyes
  • Durt shakes the last bodyguard roughly back to consciousness
  • Malaina hooks her Chakrams back onto her belt
Durt: ((welcome back. We’re wrapping up for next week, which will be the last session of this adventure if you hadn’t caught that; then Dave will be taking over as GM for one adventure))
Jessaila: “Doesn’t look like you got the best bodyguards.”
  • Durtguard tells Durt how you all fought with the bodyguards agains “two drakes and a crazy untouchable saurian mage hazelighter demon”
Jessaila: “Well. Doesn’t look like you’ve got many living bodyguards, now.”
  • Durtguard exagerates a little, not that it needs much exaggeration
Durt: “Huh. Not many now…thank you for helping keep assasins away from Durt.”
Jessaila: “I like to keep future potential paychecks alive. You paid us decently, after all.”

You can almost see the wheels moving in Durt’s head

  • Jessaila waits for the wheels.
Durt: “Want better paycheck? Keep off next assassin too?”
  • Malaina tilts her head
Jessaila: “How many assassins do you deal with? And how much silver are we talking about?”
Durt: “400, but week instead of month. Not get /so/ many assasins, but when assasin come always tough fight.” Isabis: “Tell him it sounds like more fun than taking candy from caravans.”
  • Malaina quirks her brow
  • Jessaila glances at the others.
Jessaila: “Expenses included, or do we pay our own?”
  • Seiankornai roars off in the distance
  • Jessaila gets into haggle mode.
  • Vari looking at him like he is crazy
Durt: “Expenses include! Bed, food – don’t need weapons, have weapons…”
Jessaila: ((No reason that, just because we’re going to stab him in the back and put him in jail, that we can’t get a good paycheck." Jessaila: ))
  • Durt haggles back « 1d20+13 = 20 + 13 = 33 »
  • Seiankornai chuckles, “I figure that they’re probably haggling right now over a job, figure it’ll make the ogre more receptive if he thinks the threat is still around… which it is ;)”
Jessaila: “Well, that sure sounds like a comfy gig to me…”
  • Thurirl considers spreading a rumor that Durt has been marked for death by a up-and-coming rival…
    Malaina: “Me too.”
  • Durt is nervous, but not so nervous he lets you haggle him into an even more exorbitant paycheck.
  • Vari nods in understanding and also roars to let Durt know he is still around…and will be watching closely
    Jessaila: “Okay, I’m in.”
Malaina: “Me too.”

You all sign on as bodyguards for Durt, noting the Very Interesting non-disclosure terms which you intend to break the living ink out of.
Then you clean up the alley…. and then Durt tells you to “Get clean, we go see bosses soon. Not look scruffy.”

  • Malaina is glad because she has ogre blood on her boots
It sounds like this gambit is going to pay off in more than just silver.
Jessaila: “Yeah, I still smell pickles.”

Malaina: “It’s just not right.”
