When last we saw our heroes, they were putting the beatdown on some underpaid ogre mercenaries.
It is Malaina’s turn.
Seiankornai: “Why is it always ogres?”

Isabis: “What are you talking about? It was goblins last week, and /undead mountain goats/ a few days ago. How is it ‘always’ ogres?” Vari: « 1d20+3 = 12 + 3 = 15 » Fire Breath @ 44

Dragonhawk: ((the diamond is for …oops. The diamond is “one less toughness”))

Jessaila overcomes the ogre’s tough hide and pierces his greedy heart.
Dragonhawk: ((it must be greedy, he’s a mercenary ))

Jessaila: “Boo. Yah.”

Seiankornai: ((meanwhile her own greedy heart is safe?))

Dragonhawk: ((from that ogre anyhow))

Malaina: ((They said boo yah in that era?))

Thurirl has received initiative.
Jamshid par-Bahadur: ((I can’t use action dice after he rolls his save can I?))

Jamshid par-Bahadur: ((to add to damage that is))

  • Thurirl doesn’t see any need to pepper the battlefield with his bad aim. He decides to check on one of the guards.
    ogre: ((no, I don’t think so. ))

Jamshid par-Bahadur: ((I don’t remember a rule against it but it seems like there should be … checking))

Jessaila has received initiative.
ogre: ((my recollection is that you are supposed to use action dice after the regular roll but before the results are declared))

Seiankornai: ((right))

Jessaila: Touche! (Fencing Blade Attack Trick): If your target is a standard character with a lower Dexterity score than yours, he immediately fails his Damage save (damage isn’t rolled). You may use this trick once per round. « 1d20+7 = 7 + 7 = 14 » to hit.

  • ogre 70 saves for « 1d20+9 = 18 + 9 = 27 » vs 28
The final ogre wavers, and for a moment it seems he will stay up, but after a moment he collapses all the same.
    End Init
You send one of the guards to the head of the caravan to let Brom know it’s safe to stop. That guy’s getting pretty good at running up the line.
Grok: ((someone tend to injured, please))
  • Seiankornai hovers above the entangling grass, “Thurirl, this is your handiwork, right? Mind gettign rid of it?”
Malaina: ((I think Thurirl is healing him))
  • Isabis pokes one of the grasses that is pretending to be a vine.
  • Thurirl looks up and dismisses the spell, then goes to work healing the guard.
Isabis: “Unusually thick overgrowth, even for the spell.”
  • Isabis fetches the rope and binds the surviving ogres. Well, the enemies that is.
  • Seiankornai lands
  • Malaina goes to see if he can help Thurirl look over the guard that got knocked out
  • Seiankornai exmines teh ogres, to make sure they’re dead or not. He takes another bite out of the one he bit the head off of
Thurirl: ((better not let Grok see you do that =P))

Seiankornai: “Hmm, attacked once again. I do wonder how much more we’re going to have to deal with on this trip.”

  • Seiankornai is just as arrogant as Grok, and doesn’t care if the ogre sees or not
Jessaila: “At least we dispatched these faster than those goblins.”
Isabis: “…you saw four groups in your vision, didn’t you? Do you think we’ve seen three different ones of them now?”
  • Thurirl smiles and nods to Malaina. He uses a healing spell to patch up the guard’s wounds.
  • Malaina smiles
Seiankornai: “Hmm, it is possible, I suppose… which means we might have one more to deal with on this trip…”
Isabis: “So what are we doing with these prisoners?”
  • Isabis eyes a cart dubiously, comparing the space taken up by six goblins with the space taken up by two ogres.
Thurirl: “Taking the ogres with may prove difficult. However, they may hold valuable intel and it would be inadvisable to leave them here to roam.”

Seiankornai: “Yes, we should at least find out who hired them.”

Jessaila: “Before you eat them all.”
  • Isabis sighs
Seiankornai: “… Then leave them, I think.” stikes tongue at Jessaila

Seiankornai: *sticks

  • Jessaila fails to comprehend the tongue.
Isabis: “Drakes. Sometimes you just can’t make them understand that burning the dead and eating them isn’t the same, no matter how hot their stomachs may be.”
  • Malaina chuckles
Seiankornai: “I’m not eating prisoners, because it is strongly against your sensibilities and I shall respect them while I travel with you.”
Isabis: “…that’s the only reason?”

Seiankornai: “Mostly, yes.”

Jessaila: “Oh. I thank you for that, then.”
  • Malaina hops into Vari’s saddle
Seiankornai: “I generally don’t take prisoners in the first place. Though what I have mostly fought have been mountain goblins.”
Isabis: “Ah…well, I can see where mountain goblins would be something of a special case anyhow.”
  • Jessaila cleans her saber and shrugs. “I’ve usually just hunted. It’s not exactly the sort of activity for taking prisoners.”
  • Thurirl is suddenly glad his species isn’t known for eating other races. Except perhaps when food gets low… and technically, trees don’t count as people unless you convert…
Seiankornai: “There’s also other cases, such as that fey we met back there, where it was a misunderstanding.”
Jessaila: “Yes, tasty dear, I take you prisoner for your tastiness!”
  • Malaina laughs over what Jess says
Jessaila: ((Yes yes, deer not dear.))

Seiankornai: ((no eating loved ones))

Jessaila: ((Sorry, fiance and I were discussing romance stories and ‘dear’ was on the mind. ))

Seiankornai: ((heh))

The guards mostly think you’re all crazy by now, but they help you get the prisoners bound up on top of a wagon and you move on.
Grok: so what’s next?

  • Seiankornai sees Grok is chaining up the unconcious ogres and dragging them along. Sigh “Guess we’ll have them for a little while with us.”
By nightfall, you’ve all learned many new curses in Woanish, and the prisoners are as ready to talk as they are likely to get without taking extreme measures.
    Ogre1: (w) “Honorless sons of…of grass…farmers…”
  • Ogre1 is getting pretty tired
  • Grok is speaking to them about the pride of the ogre race, and the duties that come from being an ogre. Such as recognizing Grok as supreme ogre
  • Jessaila is getting rather tired of ogres by the end of the day.
Grok: W “I beat you up, I better than you, you follow me now.”

Seiankornai: “Son of a grass farmer is an insult?”

Ogre1: (W) “I recognize Grok as supreme ogre when Grok have real tribe and not run around with weak humans! Humans only good for gold!”

  • Malaina combing her hair as she listens to everything she can’t understand
  • Vari sleeping through it all…yes, pretty much a hard sleeper when nothing of real importance (to him) is going on
Jessaila: W “Actually, humans are good for silver, too.”

Ogre1: ((he’s run through his A and B material and most of his energy, so now you’re getting the C-list insults.))

Seiankornai: ((he’s a growing Drake, they need their sleep ;) ))

Jessaila: W “Also muffins.”

Malaina: ((lol))

Ogre1: (w) “Wha…muffins? Uh. Pechs better for muffins.”

  • Ogre1 gives the cookfire a hungry glance though
Jessaila: W “Clearly you’ve never had Mama Ginka’s Muffins Of Unusual Size.”

Ogre1: ((LOL 1 bonus action die to Jessaila))

Jessaila: ((Yay!))

Seiankornai: W “So humans are good for gold, how so?”

  • Thurirl shakes his head. Humans and their baked goods! He’ll pay attention when they mention meat.
Ogre1: (w) “Uh…that sound, uh…who care? I buy any muffin when get paid.”
  • Ogre1 mutters “I get paid for some job eventually”
  • Ogre2 kicks ogre1
    Ogre2: “Shut up!”

Ogre1: “You shut up!”

  • Ogre1 kicks back
Seiankornai: W “Is this how all ogres act amongst themselves, Grok?”
Jessaila: W “You didn’t ask for payment up front?”

Malaina: “….why are they kicking each other?” flips her hair over her shoulder

Ogre1: (woanish unless stated otherwise) “Get half up front, half when win battle.”

Ogre2: “No tell enemies about contract!”

Seiankornai: W “How much is that?”

Ogre1: “Why not? Beaten with grass, not get paid other half anyway.”

Jessaila: W “But why didn’t you just take the first half of the payment and go buy muffins?”

Ogre1: “Take…wha…never though of that.”

  • Jessaila cocks her head to the side.
  • Malaina decides to go either find something to eat or get ready for bed since she can’t understand the conversation, mutting about ogres
Thurirl: “I have a feeling we will sufficient intel by the time this argument is over.”

Ogre2: “Talk big about honor for small hearted cow…”

Seiankornai: ((she can come over and look like a particularly scary human :P :) ))

Ogre1: "NOT CALL ME COW!:

The ogres commence a kick fight
Jessaila: W “I mean, unless the person who paid you is so scary that reneging on your contract was a bad idea.”

  • Thurirl thinks he’s starting to pick up a little Woanish…
Ogre1: “Win battle, get enough silver for TWO muffins.” kicks ogre2 “Stupid to run away with only half if can get all.”

Ogre1: “Traders never have so many guards before, not expect to get tied up in grass and beat with rocks and lose.”

Seiankornai: W “What if we paid you double? Then you could get four muffins.”

Ogre1: “…pay to do what?”

Seiankornai: W “Then you tell us all about hte person who hired you.”

Grok: W “Serve Grok the MIGHTY!”

Ogre2: “NOT RENEGOTIATE CONTRACT WITH ENEMY!!” kick kick kick

Grok: W “Ogre not enemy!”

Seiankornai: “… Grok, can you hit them or something?”

  • Grok wacks ogre2 upside the head
Ogre1: “Grok the Mighty not enemy. He not trader. If pay double, why not.”

Ogre2: “Ow. Well…maybe contract over. Made try to attack traders, fail, job done.”

Ogre1: “Yes! Job done, new job now, pay better. Get second half for once.”

Grok: W “Ogre never fail unless he goes against another ogre.”

Jessaila: W “It’s good to move up in the world, you know.”

Grok: W “Remember dat.”

Seiankornai: W “But you went against them?”

Jessaila: W “And next time, when negotiating a contract with an employer, you can point to the successful completion of this contract. Employers like to hear that you’ve successfully completed contracts, and they’ll pay you more.”
  • Thurirl is not sure he’s following all of it… something about “muffins” or maybe “mittens”… or was that “vest”?
Seiankornai: W “Or did their attacking first means you can attack them?”

Ogre1: “How much you pay really? Not know price tag from Muffin of Unusual Size. Want 200s.”

Jessaila is disconnected.
Seiankornai: ((how much silver did we find among the dead ogres? :P ;) ))

Jessaila has connected.
Grok: probably not too much…

Seiankornai: ((« 1d20+7 = 11 + 7 = 18 » Coin))

Ogre2: "Want 400s! "

Ogre2: « 18*57* = Invalid expression: 18*57*. »

Ogre2: « 3*57 = 3 * 57 = 171 »

Seiankornai: ((« 1d20+7 = 13 + 7 = 20 » Coin))

Ogre2: « 4*57 = 4 * 57 = 228 »

Ogre2: you found « 171+228 = 171 + 228 = 399 » silver on the dead

Grok: darn, 1 short

Jessaila: W “You want four hundred silver?”

Seiankornai: W “Very well”, M “Where’s that recently acquired silver weg got?”

Ogre2: “Yes! And proper contract with non-lethal termination …thingy…clause. And clear list of duties.”

Jessaila: W “Do you want a written contract, or just verbal?”

Ogre1: “And what called…food while serving…upkeep. Want upkeep while serving clause!”

Ogre2: “Written, written!”

Grok: ((and how contact with others has changed orge kind…))

Ogre2: ((they’re mercenaries, mercenarie contracts are the one thing they know how to do well with non-ogres ))

Jessaila: “Isabis! Please get your writing utensils and a sheet of paper, please!”

  • Seiankornai blinks, “I was not aware ogres had such… business sense.”
  • Isabis brings over a sheet of parchment and her portable inkwell.
Jessaila: W (To ogres.) “I have summoned our Holy Business Scribe to write the contract.”
  • Seiankornai collects the 399 silver we found from the dead ogres, and adds 1 to it from his pouch."
Ogre2: “Hey, no honor in being bested at contract writing. Want good contract not be treated like stupid.”
  • Thurirl feels amused. At least the ogres are smart enough to haggle, from what he can make out.
  • Seiankornai passes by Thurirl, “They want 400 silver to buy muffins with.”
Thurirl: “Muffins? How illogical. Meat is far superior.”

Seiankornai: “I know! But it amuses me nonetheless.”

Malaina: ((imaginary Derpy Hooves smacks Thurirl upside his head for such blaspemy))

Ogre2: ((they want meat too, Jessaila just distracted them with the giant muffin imagery))

Thurirl: ((good thing thurirl can’t feel imaginary baps =P))

  • Grok is now feeling hungry
  • Ogre2 haggles with the group for « 1d20+2 = 20 + 2 = 22 »
Grok: ((Can I activate that for him?))

Seiankornai: ((NO!!)))

Thurirl: ((makes strangling motions))

Grok: ((Go Ogre, go Ogre go, go, go Ogre!)0

Seiankornai: ((What’s Grok’s haggle?))

Grok: ((He doesn’t have any… It would be +1))

Seiankornai: ((What’s Jamshid’s haggle?))

Grok: ((I think I’m going to have to get a holding just so I can keep these guys around…))

Jamshid par-Bahadur: ((checking))

Jamshid par-Bahadur: Haggle 19

Seiankornai: ((boost it! boost it!))

Jamshid par-Bahadur: Action die 2

Grok: ((Don’t, DON’T.))

Grok: Go ogre, go ogre, go ogre.

Ogre2: ((OK, 19, +2 circumstance bonus, +2 action die = 23 vs 22, you win by 1. the ogres accept a contract price of « 400*0.9 = 400 * 0.9 = 360.0 »

The ogres get more than the two hundred that Ogre1 initially asked for, and not too much less than the 400 Ogre2 opened the bidding with, so they are fairly pleased with the deal. As a side effect, you may now safely let them out of their bindings and down off the cart.
Grok: ((Stupid circumstance bonus….))

  • Jessaila also gives the ogres detailed directions to Mama Ginka’s Muffin Makery.
  • Ogre2 thinks this is silly, but Ogre1 memorizes the directions carefully
Seiankornai: W “Now then tell us, who hired you and why, where can we find them, what are they, and how do they intend to gain from disrupting caravans.”

Seiankornai: “If I could figure out a suitable ‘when’ question I would have asked that too.”

  • Ogre1 tells his compatriot “Pech muffins always too small, these maybe big enough for ogres.”
Grok: W “But Pech muffins taste best. Just eat lots.”
  • Jessaila totally isn’t lying about the Muffins of Unusual Size.
Ogre2: “Hired by little short guy…ogre, not dwarf…but all contracts in dwarf language, and all silver have hammer on it. Also, short guy pretty stupid, pretend to be from SaltWeep but not know people that normally hire mercenaries for salt weep.”

Seiankornai: W “A little ogre?”

  • Jessaila listens.
    Ogre2: ((little is relative ))

Ogre2: “Yeah. Want to make humans trade less, not tell us why. Contract say break wagons, break bones, not kill except in battle. Not hurt dwarves – hah, like salt weep care who get hurt – only humans and mercenaries for humans.”

Ogre2: “Not say what happen if dwaf is mercenary for humans, and short guy not have answer when I ask him. Stupid. Say that not happen.”

Ogre2: “Not think ogre is mercenary for humans either.”

  • Ogre2 nods a Grok
Seiankornai: W “A Mercenary for the Crone, perhaps?”
  • Jessaila waits for the inevitable hilarous comeback.
  • Thurirl gets a translation and is alarmed at this news. “I do not believe who hired them is from this continent.”
    Seiankornai: “You don’t?”

Ogre1: “Wut? No, no. HE not think any ogre is mercenary for humans. Him, I not know, only know he pretend to be from Crone and not. Stupid, bad actor.”

  • Seiankornai is curious as to why Thurirl chose to say “this continent” rather than “this world”
Ogre1: “We not work for Crone, salt weep is bad employer, not let mercenaries quit even when contract end.”

Jessaila: W “That’s not good business policy.”

Thurirl: “Strange. Whoever their employer was, it was not the Crone… and yet, they were ignorant of key clients for mercenaries.”

Ogre2: “Plus, salt weep put mercenaries in worst places, get killed, not have to pay. Offer very big pay, but what good that do if not live to get it?”

Grok: ((I love these guys. so much fun.))

  • Thurirl finds his opinion of ogres in general has gone up. Travelling with this lot has proven most fascinating.
Grok: ((anyways, I’ve got to get to bed, so I’m going to call it for tonight. Grok will continue his destructive, troublesome, Ogre first ways in my absence))

Ogre2: “Little guy different kind of stupid, though. Contract very normal, bargain hard ove price.”

Ogre2: ((goodnight.))

Grok is disconnected.
Ogre2: “He not know anything about how real salt weep agent act. Wear crone symbol with bad fit, pretend to know what he talk about.”

  • Ogre2 snorts at the remembered bad acting
    Seiankornai: “Iiiiiinteresting.”

Seiankornai: W “Also when was it that he hired you?”

Ogre1: “Not know what they want to get from making humans trade less. Maybe they want to trade more? They not tell, busy pretending to be from salt weep.”

  • Jessaila wonders if the hiring agent was trying to act incorrectly so that the ogres presumed that the truth they actually told was really a lie.
Ogre2: “We hired three weeks ago ((30 days)), but that guy hiring a while before then. He move around coast places, finding more people to hire. Some he send to coast, some he send to roads in valley.”

Ogre2: “Not hire anyone to attack river traders, though. Not make sense, but he get mad when ask why.”

  • Ogre2 thinks
Seiankornai: W “Hmm, I had a vision the other day, about some who were hiring the likes of you, but many, but then the Cronists noticed and began hiring too, acting like them. I would be disinclined to taking any further mercenary work like this, because then it might be the Crone and as you said, she has terrible contracts.”

Ogre2: “Well, maybe mad because I making it obvious he lie about who he work for.”

Ogre2: “Well…that fine. We busy working for you now anyway.”

Malaina: ((Working for us?))

Grok: W “Yes, you work for me now, and Grok the Mighy will always have new contract for fellow ogres!”

Ogre1: “Yeah, not take two jobs in one time. Make employers angry, get fired with sword.”

Malaina: ((Yes he would!))

Seiankornai: W “Or get fired with actual fire.”

  • Seiankornai grins
Ogre1: “Only if work for drake. Not like to work for drake, not like mountains that much.”

Ogre2: “Not like ocean that much either, but went on boat when silver was good.”

Ogre1: “Shut up!”

Ogre2: “You still just mad that Ogrik won contract to guard drake gold!”

Ogre2: “SHUT UP!”

Seiankornai: “Was this for the same person who hired you?”

Ogre2: ((that last was Ogre1))

Ogre2: “No, that long time ago.”

  • Seiankornai finds it hard to believe any drake would hire an ogre to guard one’s gold
  • Ogre1 mutters “Had much better offer than Ogrik, him probably try to steal drake gold anyway.”
  • Seiankornai certainly wouldn’t, not even Grok who he knows
Seiankornai: “Good way to get eaten be a drake.”

Ogre2: ((OOC, it was a gold /mine/ and they were supposed to keep goblins out of it))

Thurirl: ((still drake gold… not a good idea to pocket shiney rocks… unless it’s fool’s gold))

Ogre2: ((Ogre1 might not have quite understood the job, which might have something to do with why he wasn’t hired 9.9 ))

The ogres join your party; you explain to Brom that you have hired them to help keep off other mercs. Brom is…sort of willing to go along with this.
The rest of the trip up the coast is quiet…it might have something to do with the three ogres in your party, or maybe you’ve just run out of enemies on this particular route.
Soon enough, you are on a ferry sailing to the islands and payday!
